Kendo is a type of athletic contest in which practitioners wear protective armor (Kendo Bogu) and use bamboo swords (Shinai) to strike each other. However, Kendo is a martial way that aims to forge the mind and body of practitioners and facilitate the development of character through continued practice.

Ryan Kang is a member of the Southern California Kendo Organization (SCKO), a regional federation under the All United States Kendo Federation (AUSKF). He began practicing Kendo in 1991 and currently holds the rank of 7th Dan.
